About Wedding Cakes

The tradition of sharing a wedding confection goes back for thousands of years. A symbol of fertility and abundance, the bride and groom in ancient Greece would partake of a sesame cake in hopes of a fruitful marriage. In Rome, an offering of honey cake was offered to Jupiter following the wedding vows; after which, the bride and groom would be allowed to taste. At the banquet, the well-wishing friends and family would break apart small cakes over the bride, symbolizing good wishes.

From these ancient times, the Middle Ages, and on through Elizabethan England, custom was to throw all manner of little cakes, fruits, grains and nuts at the newly wed couple in an effort to bless them with prosperity, fertility and good luck. Another popular custom was to place a piece of cake under the pillow of the wedding bed to induce pleasant dreams.

About the middle of the 17th Century, the French Pastry Chefs, who had fled to England from France during the Puritan revolution, set about to elevate the stature of the English wedding cake. Instead of small, individual pastries, they made larger cakes and covered them with rich layers of icings, which became the ancestors of our wedding cakes of today. They were looked upon as colorful showpieces to add to the grand decor of the celebration; however, the creations would literally be torn apart by the guests. So, in addition, to overcome the tradition of tearing apart the cake, the English created the Grooms Cake (traditionally made of fruits and nuts) so that one cake could stand and be admired, and the other could be torn apart for eating.

In more modern times, The Yummy Tummy Cafe makes wedding cakes to suit most any bride and most any theme. Our cakes range from the traditional to the unusual; depending on what our clients request. What type of Wedding Cake do you want?
How do you choose?

Start off by thinking of what flavor you want. The type of cake is actually determined by the design of the cake. If you want a traditional cake, you can choose any type; however, if your cake design is going to be untraditional (sculpted), you need to choose a pound cake, which is stronger when shaped.

Fillings come in a variety of flavors, and most can be used in traditional and untradiitional designs. We will assist you in your choices.

Icing Flavors come next, and will serve as a background for your cake design. Any flavor is usable in an air-conditioned indoor setting; however, if you are having an outdoor wedding in direct sunshine and heat, fondant is the only melt-proof way to go.
